어제 해그름녘에 문상을 다녀왔습니다.
출판사를 경영하는 지인의 부친상이었습니다.
그저께 연락을 받았는데, 그날은 저녁약속이 너무 늦어져 가지 못했습니다.
장소는 고대 안암병원 영안실.
4호선 안암역에서 내리니 바로 코앞이었습니다.
그런데 병원 입구에서 영안실까지는 상당히 먼 거리였습니다.
병원 입구에 도착해 오른쪽으로 들어서면 장례식장 안내판이 보입니다.
반 원을 그리듯이 휘익 돌아 장례식장으로 가는 데
길 건너 왼편으로 무슨 기념물 같은 조형물이 눈에 들어왔습니다.
조형물 주변에 꽃이 놓인 걸로 봐 무슨 추념탑 같았습니다.
평소 몇 번 이곳을 다녀갔지만 그 때마다 차편을 이용하거나
아니면 여럿이 잡담을 하면서 갔던 관계로 주위를 살펴볼 여유가 없었습니다.
혼자였던 나는 도로를 건너 조형물로 향했습니다.
가까이 가서보니 조형물 앞에 이런 설명이 있었습니다.
감은탑, 즉 은혜에 감사드리는 탑이라는 겁니다.
내용을 읽어보니 고대 병원에 시신을 기증하신 분들을 추념하는 탑이었습니다.
지난 2007년에만 모두 23명이 이곳에 시신을 기증하셨더군요.
다만 빛바랜 조화(造花)들을 보고 조금은 마음이 서운했습니다.
다시말하면, 근래엔 찾아온 사람이 없었다는 얘기겠지요.
기증자들의 이름을 새겨넣을 공간은 아직은 많아 보였습니다.
그러나 언젠가는 그 공간이 가득차게 되겠지요.
얼마인지 알 수 없는 많은 분들이 생애 마지막 사랑을 실천하고 가시겠지요.
남녁에서부터 올라온 꽃소식이 이제 서울에도 도착했습니다.
엊그제부터 여의도에 벚꽃축제가 시작됐다고 들었습니다.
제가 사는 아파트에도 온갖 꽃들이 활짝 피었습니다.
고대 안암병원이라고 예외일 수 없겠지요.
감은탑 인근에 노란 개나리와 보라색 목련이 한창이었습니다.
그 순하고 아름다운 자태는 마치 순진무구한 어린이를 연상시킵니다.
그 꽃잎들도 가지에 달려 있을 때는 꽃잎이지만,
시간이 지나 땅에 떨어지면 그 땐 '낙화', 아니 쓰레기입니다.
처치곤란하고, 지저분해서 사람들이 피하게 되지요.
마치 죽은 사람의 시신과 다를 바 없습니다.
그러나 그 시신도 의대생들을 만나면 더없이 귀한 보물이 되지요.
감은탑에 이름이 새겨진 분들은 자신의 시신을 보물로 만든 분들인 셈이지요.
코 앞에 장례식장으로 인도하는 안내판이 보입니다.
그리고 저도 나중에 그리 할 것을 약속드립니다.
